Game Design: What Is A Game?

Image
( https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/pacman-ghosts-s-computer-game-icons-set-vector-colour-pixelated-retro-32825491.jpg ) What is a game A game is a form of art. It is a play activity with a set of rules that players are given and the player who follows the rules the best is usually the player that wins. Games date back to centuries ago. A game doesn't necessarily mean a video game. A game is simply just something that you can play with a set of rules so when someone says "let's play a game" that can mean Super Mario Bros, it can mean football or it can simply mean hide and go seek. A game will consist of rules, resources,  actions, a story and plenty of other elements. For our readings an example of a game given was 3 to 15. 3 to 15 is a game where 2 players have to collect 3 numbers from 1-9 that add up to 15. First you must write up the numbers 1-9 on a sheet of paper. Players then take it in turns choosing a number and then they cross that number out from the sheet s

Introduction Post

My name is Eoin Harrington. I am 22 years old. I am in 2nd year in creative digital media in TUD Blanchardstown. The photo above is a picture of myself (and a pretty good one might I add). The best classes I took last semester were digital photography and storytelling and narrative. I enjoyed digital photography because I have an interest in photography and it was fairly easy and I passed it. I enjoyed storytelling because I have an interest in filmmaking and it is what I want to do when I am finished this course so I ended up with a basic idea of what it was like to actually make a film as our main assignment was to make a short film and I then passed it which made me very happy as I now feel like I might actually be good at it. I enjoyed introduction to digital media as well because it was interesting learning about the evolution of digital media and I enjoyed doing the essays as they were interesting topics. Web development was an interesting module however I did find it very chal

Time Strategies

( https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/social-media-time-management-concept-alarm-clock-hand-hold-social-media-time-management-concept-alarm-clock-hand-hold-121690723.jpg ) Time management is a very important thing in life when it comes to our priorities especially with college work. College assignments always have deadlines that students must meet in order to pass the assignments however many students myself included often end up leaving assignments to the last minute which I learned last year was a very bad idea. I often found myself leaving my assignments until the last minute and putting myself under way too much pressure to get them done and this resulted in me failing three of my modules and repeating them over the summer which I also left too late and put myself under too much pressure and was constantly panicking throughout August, it was a miracle that I actually passed all three with so little time. These mistakes have led me to realise that in order to avoid ever getting into thi

Technology we will be using for this module

The one we have already used a lot is Blogger where we have written all our blogs for our weekly tasks. We will be using Unity a lot throughout this module. I remember using Unity when I was in my PLC and I found it fairly hard. However this is the only tool I am familiar with so far. Other tools we will use are Spark, Canvas, Cheezburger and Automotivator. I have heard of Spark and Canvas however I have never used them and I have never heard of Cheezburger.  I look forward to trying out all these new tools in this module and I am hoping I will become better at game design while doing this module throughout the year and it will get easier overtime. We never did any game design in first year however we did do a blog for our photography modules

My thoughts on assignments

When I did my PLC in Dunboyne I did a game design module which I found very hard and very boring as game design isn't something I am very interested in however the more I looked into it the more confident I felt. Throughout this module we are given blog topics to do each week and I have to say despite one or two complications they were fairly easy. I enjoyed the blog about my favourite game as I do enjoy playing video games and talking about them. We have been and all will continue to do lots of reading throughout this module and then writing about what we have read which I have to say is very straight forward however I am about worried about the Unity tutorials and designing a game as I have had experience with that in my PLC and didn'

Growth Mindset

( https://i0.wp.com/holdthesemoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/GrowthMindsetQuote3.jpg?resize=396%2C512&ssl=1 ) Growth mindset is the idea that anything is possible through hard work and dedication and the idea of always learning new skills no matter how hard they may be and believing that you can become talented at something by working hard at it rather than your talent just being a trait for example, you may not be good at football when you first try it but with a growth mindset you will tell yourself that "if I just go out and practice and attend training sessions and continue to play football with my friends I'll get better at it. Growth mindset is all about stepping up to new challenges and teaching yourself how to improve rather than giving up and refusing to try new things. Growth mindset believes that anyone can be good at anything if they just put their mind to it which is the opposite of a fixed mindset. A fixed mindset believes that people are born with t

My Favourite Game: Grand Theft Auto Franchise

GRAND THEFT AUTO ( https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/logo-grand-theft-auto-game-samsung-tablet-grand-theft-auto-gta-action-adventure-video-game-series-created-david-113844972.jpg ) My favourite video game franchise is the Grand Theft Auto franchise or as it's otherwise known GTA. Grand Theft Auto is an open-world action-adventure video game franchise where you play as gang members who mainly specialise in car theft hence the title Grand Theft Auto. The first Grand Theft Auto was released in 1997 and its most recent title Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013. Grand Theft Auto V is currently the best-selling video game of all time. The franchise consists of seven main games and four expansion packs. I like the whole concept of these games. I like that you have the choice between playing missions and completing story mode as well as a really enjoyable free play. One of my favourite things to do during free play is police chases. My favourite game in the franchise is Grand Theft Auto

My First Day Hi everyone hope you all enjoy my first post. Last week I had my orientation into the college for 2nd year. I was supposed to have it last year but due to Covid I never did and spent my whole first year doing college. It was a very stressful year however it's great to finally be on campus and finally meet my classmates and lecturers and I'm hoping for an easier and more enjoyable year this year.
